The Start of the Revolutionary War: The First Continental Congress, 1774


On September 5, 1774, twelve North American colonies selected 56 representatives to convene the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. They issued a declaration, established the Continental Assembly, and decided to change the relationship between the colonies and the mother country. New England organized independent militia forces. The Massachusetts representative assembly appointed John Hancock as the chairman of the Committee of Safety, marking the beginning of the American Revolutionary War.
