MAO ZEDONG: MY CONFESSION 1893-1976 VOLUME 2
IV Catastrophe 1962-1976
The final fight of the Cultural Revolution
Chapter 80 Military propaganda team military control dropped the rebellion bands 1968
Journalist: “Did the rebel leader Kuai Dafu kneel down in front of you?”
Mao: “Yes, in July 1968. After inciting the students to rebel for about two years, it was becoming difficult to control the situation. The rebel faction was becoming more disobedient. So, I resorted to the method of sending military propaganda teams and workers’ propaganda teams to take control of the campuses. However, they faced resistance from Tsinghua University. I then summoned the five major leaders in Beijing, and Kuai Dafu even confronted me in person. I angrily rebuked him for lying and manufacturing weapons on his own, saying he should be arrested and sentenced. Fearing the unfavorable situation, he trembled and suddenly knelt down in front of me. Nie Yuanzi, Tan Houlan, and four others also followed suit and knelt down.
The Red Guards responded to my orders and engaged in violence, looting, and confiscation for two years, causing great chaos. Now that Liu Shaoqi is on the verge of death, I no longer need them. I asked them to reflect upon themselves. I asked them to disband, surrender their weapons, and welcome the arrival of the military with gongs and drums.”
