II. SEIZE POWER 1935—1949
Appease Japan and Expand the Military
Chapter 95 Gathering talents who are heading north one after another 1949
Journalist: “You opened the new China, how to enlist talent?”
Mao: “I opened the country, of course, we must create a crowd of stars to accompany the moon, can not look at me like a loner, I asked Zhou Enlai to recruit a wide range of domestic and foreign talent, to Beijing to discuss the state. As a matter of fact, many people came, all of them with great hope and enthusiasm, wanting to do something in the new China. Many famous people came, from Song Qingling, Zhang Bojun, Zhang Naiqi, Ma Yinchu, Liang Shuming, Li Jishen, Zhang Dongsun, Xiong Shili, Ma Sicong, and so on, and there were more than a hundred famous people. There are also many masters of science and technology who have returned from the United States. I can say that there are a lot of talents, I am very proud.”
Journalist: “The new CPPCC meeting you were very successful, the democrats came to the top, it seems to be a scene of freedom and democracy.”
Mao: “Yes, but this is superficial, temporary, I have in mind, in a few years, they are all the objects of my revolution, I am tolerating them for the time being If they knew the tragic situation of my Yan’an rectification, they would not have come. The good thing is that the Yan’an rectification was done secretly within the closed, outsiders do not know the inside story.”
Journalist: “Were there also people who were discontented with you at that time?”
Mao: “Yes, during the election for the Chairman of the Political Consultative Conference, there were over 500 people voting, and I was one vote short. I used the public security apparatus to investigate and found out that it was Zhang Dongsun who voted against me. At that time, I remained calm, held back my emotions, but I kept it in mind. In the future, I destroyed Zhang Dongsun and his entire family.”
Journalist: “Is it enough to just follow your lead?”
Mao: “Not necessarily. Lao She completely followed my lead, like a trumpet-blowing lapdog. But when the Cultural Revolution came, he couldn’t bear the struggle and committed suicide by drowning himself in a lake. Lao She was in the United States, and he hesitated and delayed his return until May 1950. If he had further delayed it by more than a month, the outbreak of the Korean War would have prevented him from coming back to suffer.”
Journalist: “Back to the discontented have gone away?”
Mao: “Discontent, there are, the vast majority are dissatisfied, but into my iron barrel, do not want to go out again. Song Qingling Cultural Revolution dissatisfaction, also want to go, but can escape, almost none of them.”
Journalist: “Ma Sicong did not escape?”
Mao: “Yes, only him. He got away cheaply, sneaking off to Hong Kong and then to the United States. I ordered Kang Sheng to investigate and target his relatives and friends in a special case. Dozens of people were persecuted, and a few of them died.”
Journalist: “Oh, Ma Sicong escaped, so they targeted his relatives instead. That’s really cruel!”
